Tui-Samoa submarine cable system on track to enhance broadband connectivity across the Pacific islands

The contract is in force and planning for construction is now underway.

Samoa Submarine Cable Company Limited (SSCC) announced today that the contract signed with Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), to roll out the Tui-Samoa Cable is in force. Planning for construction of the 1,470 km cable system is now under way.

Honourable Minister Afamasaga Lepuia’i Rico Tupai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Samoa, said: “This is a significant step for the Samoa Connectivity Project and the Government of Samoa’s commitment to deliver universal access and high speed broadband connectivity for all our people, which will open up opportunities for social and economic development.”

Strengthening Samoa’s domestic and international connectivity, Tui-Samoa Cable will have landing points in Apia and Tuasivi (Samoa) and Suva (Fiji). It will deliver a capacity of at least 8 Terabits-per-second (Tbit/s) using 100 Gbit/s transmission technology.

Pepe Fia’ailetoa Christian Fruean, Chairperson of SSCC said: “As communicated, the Tui-Samoa Cable will reduce the current dependence on satellite and further accelerate the development of innovative services. Samoan people will benefit from fast, reliable and affordable internet, accessing information and advanced applications that can improve their lives.
