Cyta has taken a major step in consolidating Cyprus’ position as a regional digital infrastructure hub with the acquisition of Simplex’s flagship LCA1 data centre in Larnaca – the country’s largest privately owned facility of its kind.
With a footprint of nearly 1,000 square metres and a power capacity approaching 1 megawatt, the LCA1 facility has been designed to Tier III standards, integrating advanced physical and cyber security systems, backup infrastructure for uninterrupted availability, and green credentials including renewable energy capabilities.
The centre also meets international benchmarks, holding ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and EMAS certifications, and is a signatory to the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact (CNDCP).
According to Cyta, the acquisition reinforces its technological infrastructure and strengthens its capacity to deliver high-availability services to businesses, governments and international organisations operating across the region.
“This acquisition is not just an investment in technology,” said Cyta CEO Andreas Neocleous. “It is a statement of intent. We want Cyprus to have control of its digital infrastructure and sovereignty over its data.”
Neocleous added that the move supports the organisation’s wider strategy to offer services faster, while working “in full alignment and collaboration with the State and all stakeholders, to build a digital, technologically advanced Cyprus, a progress that concerns and includes everyone.”
The announcement comes as Cyta continues to expand its proprietary submarine cable network and prepares to build a new green data centre, reinforcing the island’s strategic position in regional data flows.
For Simplex, the move marks a new chapter. “After 20 years, the time has come for Simplex to move on to its next day and Cyta is the ideal partner for this,” said founder and CEO of Simplex, Michalis Omirou.
“Cyta’s strong brand and its broad portfolio of services create synergies for further development and even more innovative services, guaranteeing success for our customers, existing and future, but also for the establishment of Cyprus as a regional digital hub,” he added.
“I feel proud that the future of the Simplex LCA1 data center is passing into the hands of Cyta, an organisation with proven expertise, transparency and strategic vision for the future of technology in Cyprus and the wider region”, Omirou concluded.
