In a bold stride toward digital integration and technological advancement, Libya has inaugurated on May 11 the Medusa submarine cable project—an 8,700-kilometre undersea lifeline linking the North African nation directly to Europe.

Spearheaded by the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), the initiative is being lauded as a transformative step in positioning Libya as a regional telecommunications hub.

This vast infrastructure endeavor is designed not merely as a conduit for faster internet, but as the foundation for Libya’s digital future. With the Medusa cable, the cities of Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi are set to experience a surge in internet quality and speed, paving the way for robust 5G networks, the expansion of data centers, and the growth of cloud computing capabilities. LPTIC heralds this as a pivotal shift—connecting Libya to the world’s major internet service providers and anchoring the country more firmly within the global digital economy.

Beyond commercial benefits, the Medusa project carries strategic national implications. It promises to streamline digital service delivery, enhance state data governance, and support public institutions as they transition to digital-first operations. By reinforcing the technological backbone of Libya’s public sector, the Medusa cable becomes more than a fibre-optic marvel—it emerges as a cornerstone in the country’s pursuit of digital sovereignty and socio-economic revitalization.
