The East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS) has reached its second cable landing station in Kosrae, in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

Kosrae is one of the four states that make up the FSM. The cable landing follows the successful delivery of EMCS’s first cable landing station in Pohnpei in February.

The project is a joint initiative of the Governments of FSM, Kiribati, and Nauru, and is funded jointly by Australia, Japan, and the United States.

The fiber optic cable will stretch approximately 2,250km (1,400 miles) from Tarawa to Pohnpei and will connect to the existing HANTRU-1 cable, which connects Pohnpei to Guam. Work on the project initially began in 2022. The final landing stations, in Pohnpei, Micronesia; and Yaren, Nauru, are expected to be completed sometime this year.

The project is expected to cost around AU$135 million (US$84m), and is supported by a grant of AU$60 million (US$37m) via the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. The AIFFP provides loan and grant financing to Pacific island countries for infrastructure projects. The AIFFP funded a project for a subsea cable in Timor-Leste in 2023.

DXN led the manufacturing of the cable landing stations in Perth and is installing the stations in FSM. The company will deliver a total of four cable landing stations in Tarawa, Kiribati; Kosrae, Micronesia; Pohnpei, Micronesia; and Yaren, Nauru.

The company was awarded the contract – valued at US$3.8 million – in May of last year, with completion expected sometime in 2025. The design, prefabrication, and construction of the four landing stations will be carried out in DXN’s factory in Perth.

NEC is leading the construction, supply, and installation of the submarine cable infrastructure. The corporation announced it had acquired the contract in June 2023.
