Chunghwa Telecom has announced plans to invest in the E2A submarine cable system, a trans-Pacific fiber-optic network expected to span roughly 12,500 kilometers. The project will be developed in partnership with SK Broadband of South Korea, SoftBank of Japan, and Verizon of the United States. Using advanced submarine cable technologies, the system aims to strengthen digital links between Asia and North America once completed.

The initiative comes as global demand for connectivity surges, fueled by AI-driven cloud services, data processing, and next-generation mobile networks. The E2A system is designed to deliver high capacity and low latency while supporting scalable and reliable international data transmission. It will also incorporate sustainability-focused engineering to enable more efficient and environmentally responsible operations.

Stretching across the Pacific Ocean, the cable will connect major digital gateways in Asia and North America. Planned landing points include Toucheng in Taiwan, Busan in South Korea, Maruyama in Chiba, Japan, and Morro Bay in California, USA. These links are expected to strengthen connectivity for AI platforms, cloud providers, and data centers while enabling faster cross-Pacific and regional data exchange.

The E2A system will also interconnect with other emerging Asian submarine networks, including the Southeast Asia–Japan Cable 2 and the Apricot through Taiwan. This integration will broaden routing diversity and further establish Taiwan as a strategic submarine cable hub in the Asia-Pacific. Beyond addressing rising connectivity demands, the network is expected to improve overall resilience by offering alternative transmission routes. Chunghwa Telecom also plans to combine the new cable with its broader portfolio of submarine infrastructure, providing flexible connectivity between Asia and the United States as part of a long-term global network strategy. The E2A system is targeted to be ready for service in the second half of 2028, significantly expanding trans-Pacific digital capacity.
