Google Announces Three New Americas Subsea Cables

Google has unveiled Alisios, Canoa and OlaLuz as three new subsea cable systems within Americas Connect, a wider network plan linking the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States and Europe.

Alisios is planned between the Dominican Republic, Panama and Chile. Canoa would run from the Dominican Republic to Bermuda, where it could connect with the Nuvem and Sol systems for onward routes toward North America and Europe. OlaLuz is designed to link the Dominican Republic directly with Florida. Google also plans a Dominican Republic branch for Firmina, extending that existing North-South America system into the Caribbean.

The company says the additions are intended to create separate paths between its cloud regions. On the Pacific side, the design includes a ring between Chile and Panama plus a third route from Panama to the U.S. West Coast. In the Caribbean, the Panama-Dominican Republic segment would connect with routes to the U.S. East Coast. The Atlantic design would join Canoa with Nuvem and Sol toward the United States and Europe.

All three newly named systems include the Dominican Republic, positioning the country as the common junction in the expansion. Government officials from the Dominican Republic, Panama, Bermuda and Chile endorsed the projects in Google’s announcement. The update is a system-announcement milestone; it does not specify construction start dates, suppliers, capacity figures or Ready for Service targets.
