UGARIT 2 Cable Agreement Advances Syria Connectivity

UNIFI Communications, the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority have executed a construction and maintenance agreement for UGARIT 2, a planned subsea link between Cyprus and Syria.
The agreement was signed in Damascus on July 28 and announced August 11. The partners describe a 240-kilometer repeaterless system connecting Pentaskhinos, Cyprus, with Tartous, Syria. Its design calls for twenty-four fiber pairs, with 31 Tbps of launch capacity and a stated path to 370 Tbps. The new route is intended to replace the original UGARIT cable, which has served Syria since 1995.
Project procurement and preparation are already advancing. The announcement says the wet plant has been ordered from Prysmian’s NSW operation, Elettra TLC will provide turnkey marine installation, and Nokia will supply Phase 1 optical transmission equipment. Marine route surveying and cable manufacturing are underway.
UNIFI says the project has been developed since 2024 under a U.S. Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control license. The company is serving as prime contractor and holds a 5% ownership interest, while Syrian Telecom and CYTA operate the landing facilities at Tartous and Pentaskhinos.
Ready for Service is targeted for early 2028. The partners caution that milestone dates remain preliminary and depend on regulatory approvals, supplier and vessel availability, regional security conditions, marine weather and other project risks.
