Data center firm Globalinx is developing a cable landing station (CLS) in Maryland set to host an Amazon subsea cable.
First reported by Telecom Ramblings, Globalinx this week announced its plans to develop a CLS near Ocean City, Maryland.
Located next to Ocean City Municipal Airport, the 24,000 sq ft (2,230 sqm) facility will be able to scale up to 5MW. The CLS is expected to be Ready for Service (RFS) in Q3 2027.
Ocean City, officially the town of Ocean City, is an Atlantic resort city in Worcester County along the East Coast of the United States. It is the only county in Maryland that borders the Atlantic Ocean.
OC Today Dispatch first reported that Globalinx was developing a new landing station in the area in October, when the company secured a 25-year lease to develop a CLS on city-owned land along Stephen Decatur Highway.
City officials said that Amazon had both applied to develop landing stations before the two decided to partner. Amazon is set to become a tenant of the site, likely for its upcoming FastNet cable to Ireland.
Under the terms of the agreement, Globalinx will pay the city $800,000 over the course of the lease for the first four cables at the CLS. The 25-year lease includes options to extend by a further 10 years.
News that Amazon was planning a cable linking Cork in Ireland to Maryland surfaced in January 2025 via an application with the Irish maritime agency, and was officially announced in November. Set to be the company’s first private cable, Fastnet will offer more than 320Tbps of capacity when operational in 2028.
Amazon is developing its own CLS in Clonakilty, County Cork. The cloud giant is also building a Maryland-based availability zone at TPG’s Quantum Frederick data center park in Frederick.
No cables currently land in Maryland. Many cables land in New Jersey to the north, or Virginia Beach to the south.
