Meo, a telecommunications operator in Portugal, has announced plans to develop a new cable landing station (CLS) in Porto.
Details on the CLS weren’t shared. Porto isn’t currently a landing point for any subsea cables, with all systems landing further south, mostly around Lisbon. No cables have been announced that will land in Porto.
Meo’s CEO, Ana Figueiredo, announced the news during the recent Atlantic Convergence conference in Lisbon. The aim is to consolidate Portugal as an international connectivity hub, facilitating the transit of data between continents and supporting the expansion of advanced digital services.
Meo (formerly TMN and PTC) is a mobile and fixed telecommunications service and brand from Altice Portugal (formerly Portugal Telecom). Meo, in its current form, was founded in 2007 after the separation of PT Comunicações and PT Multimédia (later ZON and now known as NOS).
The company said it is also expanding its network interconnection center, known as ‘Carrier House’, located in Linda a Velha, in Oeiras.
The 3,000 sqm (32,291 sq ft) facility was inaugurated in 2023 with an investment of €3 million ($3.4m). This center offers an infrastructure for open interconnection between operators and local and global networks. The strategy is to replicate and expand this capacity in the north of the country to meet the growing demand for connectivity.
Data Center Map lists five Meo facilities across Portugal in Lisbon, Covilhã, Carnide, Picoas, and Tenente Valadim.
