Mexican telecommunications company Telmex is investing $25 million in a new domestic submarine cable that will connect the territory of Baja California Sur with the rest of the country through a 383km fiber optic network.
This project seeks to contribute to the economic and social development of the region by improving data transmission, thanks to an infrastructure designed to meet the demand for connectivity services in the immediate future, as well as to help maintain the region’s connection in the event of natural events of great impact.
Héctor Slim Seade, CEO of Telmex, explained that the start of operations of this new submarine cable “consolidates the telecommunications infrastructure in our country, while at the same time, through connectivity, it meets the economic and development needs of a region as important as Baja California Sur.”
The announcement of this new cable also highlighted the environmental impact. “The TMX5 Submarine Cable was installed in strict compliance with current environmental regulations, with the technical and regulatory support of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR), the Government of Baja California Sur, and local authorities, which guaranteed the protection of the marine environment,” explained Telmex.
